Overview of the course

In this module students shall learn the principles of protein design: how has nature created such a vast array of differently shaped and functional proteins, what limits our current knowledge to explore proteins further, how can we learn protein design from evolutionary reconstructions and which techniques exist to mimic natural protein design efficiently for the purpose of e.g. drug design and in biotechnology.

Topics covered

  • Bioinformatics: In silico analysis of protein evolution, function and structure using bioinformatics (no scripting needed)
  • Communication: Literature reading and writing, presentations
  • Experimental: introduction into experimental procedures required for protein characterization.
  • Theoretical background: structural analysis using X-ray crystallography, NMR and cryo-EM.
